I had it on the edge of my counter ( had to keep them away from my cat )
Received 5 caterpillars at first I didn't think they were alive, apparently they go in a dormant stage during shipment period. After a couple of days you will start to see them move around.
There are different stages ,
The Egg : 3-5 days : The eggs are the size of a pin head.
Larva : 5-10 days : As it eats, the caterpillar skin gets tighter it will start to shed . Actually changes skin four before fully grown.
Chrysalis : 7-10 days. : What is happening in the chrysalis, the caterpillar is becoming completely liquid and reforming itself into a butterfly.
It only takes a few hours them it is ready to explore the world.
After going through all of that, the butterfly only has a 2 week life span.
They arrive in a little plastic container with some sort of paper under the lid. When they turn to Larva you can pin, or lay flat in the habitat. When they start shedding the last skin, you will see a red or pink dye, this is normal.
My grandson is only 4, but every time he was over, they look different so he had tons of questions, he love taking to them.
I'm really enjoyed the experience with The Lady Painted Butterfly Habitat.
